Box jellyfish in southern california?
Description and Comments
Marina Del Rey Harbor E doc. Yesterday I watched a jellyfish with a box shaped head chase fish for about ten minutes. It was swimming laterally cloce to the surfase, against the wind, ocasionally poping out of the water. It was intentionally swimming to line itself up with the tiny bait fish. I have never seen a jelly like this before, only on TV. When I got home I found a picture I knew matched this jellyfish before even looking at the name, it was indeed a box jellyfish. Can this be possible????

There is one species of box
There is one species of box jelly that is found naturally in Southern California. Was it a bit taller than wide, with 4 prominent tentacles?
Hopefully it is our native

Hopefully it is our native Carybdea and not an invasive box jelly! Any chance you can get a photo? Can you move the cursor on the map to the exact location?
Thank you!
