That is a small pyrosome — a colonial salp. Thanks very much for the report. They are also down in Monterey Bay in large numbers, so your sighting gives an idea of the potential extent.

Funny how you said it's an "unknown invertebrate" because pyrosomes and salps are more closely related to vertebrates than invertebrates because they are chordates.
