Millions of Jelly Fish in Waters in the Azores Islands
Description and Comments
We live on the island of Sao Jorge, Azores (9 islands in the archepelatio). They are midway between Portugal and the U.S.'s east coast. This year has been an outrageous year starting as early as March we started seeing a LOT of jellyfish. 2 days ago i finally got stung badly by one. There are also very odd looking jellyfish in fact that we have never seen here before. There are a number of theories about why we are experiencing this problem including the Japanese slaughter of a bunch of jellyfish and the sperm and eggs meshing together creating new subspecies. I don't know if the theories are legitimate as to why there are so many or not. Another person from the island of Sao Miguel is reporting the same phenomenon. Pelagia noctiluca (all different types), ctenophores, moon jellyfish and some Portuguese man of wars. I found pictures of a lot of them on line but I'm not sure how to share them with this group.

Thanks for the sightings. Of
Thanks for the sightings. Of course we know where the Azores are; famous spot for marine biology. I can assure you that Japanese jellyfish have nothing to do with your sighting. Can you give a bit of a description of the unusual jellies, or even post a photo?

You should see an "Edit" tab near the top of your report if you are logged in. From there you can upload an image. If you have any problems, you can just e-mail it to 'admin' at this domain name, and let us know the sighting number (check the web address).

I just decided to treat each photo like it was a different sighting in the end.. I haven't gotten them all posted yet though.
