Deep sea/pelagic slicks off Lovers' Point

Description and Comments

Today the water had a thick oily slick covering much of the surface waters following a large wind driven swell event. Many pelagic/deep sea jellies were trapped at the surface. The most numerous were Corolla, Carinaria, Nanomia, Praya, and a small solitary salp (looked like juvenile Thetys). Also present were; Annatiara, Leuckartiara, Pandea, Clione, Forskalea, Stomotoca, Amphinema, Aegina and many others. Before encountering this body of water the usual suspects were also around; C. fuscescens 100+, Aurelia 2-5, C. colorata 1, Phacellophora 11-99.
