Two days before, hardly any jellies and great bioluminescence. Today, it would have been hard to jump in without hitting a nettle, and no bioluminescence..

Actually, I'm guessing the opposite: no jellies = more bioluminescence. But I thought Sea nettles are cnidarians, not ctenophores?
I do know that the nettles eat small fish and some plankton. I would assume that would mean only larger plankton, so I'm guessing that if the jellies ate the dinoflagellates that produce the bioluminescence, then the dinos must be Noctiluca (roughly 2mm)?
Hopefully someone more knowledgable will chime in!

Yes,sea nettles are cnidarians, and those are not bioluminescent, but they eat Mnemiopsis, which is bioluminescent, so I was positing an inverse relationship.

Oh, I see your point. Interesting thought. I didn't see any comb jellies.
