Mitrocoma cellularia

Description and Comments

This week one can see tens to hundreds of Mitrocoma cellularia off the Friday Harbor Laboratories dock over a few minutes. The large numbers of summer jellies are winding down and Mitrocoma is what is still around along with a few Stomotoca atra and Phialidium gregarium, and the occasional Proboscidactyla flavicirrata, Pleurobrachia bachei, Bolinopsis infundibulum, and Cyanea capillata.

Interesting, there are hundreds of Mitrocoma inhabiting Monterey Bay midwaters right now. We saw hundreds on our last ROV dive, Oct. 5th. It would be great to survey the extent of the bloom along the west coast...
