Dosidicus sp. Squid Sighting- 93950

Description and Comments

Today, around 1pm I watched this large squid propel itself out of the water, into the inter-tidal. I was sitting roughly 1km south of Hopkins Marine Library, in Pacific Grove. It was swimming erratically and bashing into the rocks. Within a few minutes, it lodged itself among some rocks and was exposed to the air/sunlight for roughly 5 minutes. It became lethargic (though still breathing) and I noticed numerous hermit crabs and other larger crabs feeding on it. I gently shifted it out of the rocks and to my surprise, it started swimming and moved further out to sea. I don't believe it survived for long.

I've been told that it is most likely a member of the Dosidicus genus.
