Velella velella, NZ - June 28, 2020

Description and Comments

Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand
At least a few hundred velella velella washed up on the beach. We were there at 8:30am on June 28th and most of them looked very dried up as if they may had washed up a day or two previously.
This shoreline is quite rocky with many bays, coves, and inlets. Good surf on the day we observed the velella and they some were washed very far up the beach towards the dunes.
