Grey Rocks Dive

Description and Comments

Dive at Grey Rocks Island - bottom time = 45 min; max depth = 69 ft.
Saw 3 Cyanea capillata in the surface waters. I have been spotting 1 to 5 of these scyphs around the dock at Grey Rocks and at Seycove Marina each day for the past week or more. They are much smaller than usual for this time of year (BD about 8-15cm, compared to usual late summer/autumn sizes of nearly 1 m). We had a cold and wet June, followed by unprecedented sun and nice weather from July 4 nearly continuously well into October. There were not very many large jellies in Indian Arm this year, although I did hear others talking about "the white ones" (probably Aurelia) and I did see a select few. Haven't seen any Aequorea in a long time.
Spring bloom this year was late and intense. Great water clarity now, but still lots of matter drifting in the currents at depth.
Also of note on the dive today were hydromedusae and ctenos:
-1 Polyorchis penicillatus
-hundreds of Mitrocoma cellularia
-hundreds of Pleurobrachia bachei
