Blue lions on the beach
Description and Comments
There were several hundred blue lions manes, Cyanea lamarckii, on the beach this morning. I measured 35 of them. 16 were females brooding planulae and 19 were males. Females were significantly larger than males (t-test p<0.05). Females had a mean diameter of 17.6cm and males had a mean diameter of 13.5. About half of the medusae had hyperid amphipods on them (Hyperia medusarum).
