Bioluminescent Jellyfish in Great South Bay, Long Island?

We are staying in Fire Island on the Bay side, and last night we looked down into the water and saw hundreds of jellyfish that flashed green at intervals. The largest was probably a little bigger than my fist. I wasn’t aware that bioluminescent jellies existed on the east coast, and I grew up in the area. What were they?
