Portuguese man ‘o war in Oak Island, NC

Over the past 10 days large amounts of Portuguese man ‘o war have been spotted all over Oak Island, NC beaches. We observed a variety of sizes, from about four inches to 12 inches - but I have seen social media posts which include photos of much larger ones. I have only seen them washed up on the beach, not in the water. When we talk to locals about them, we hear “they come here very year once a year” to “this is my first time seeing these in over 50 years on the island.”
