Beached Velella velella
Description and Comments
Nine beached Velella spotted at Tahunanui Beach in Nelson, New Zealand.
One of the nine was semi-dried up; other eight were half alive as tentacle activity was visible when placed in a bucket of water.
All nine were right-handed sails.
However did not float well and often tipped tentacle up.
The beach is heavily populated by tourist and local beach goers, therefore disturbance of beach had occurred prior to spotting them.
