Chiropsalmus
Description and Comments
I collected and saw more specimens of Chiropsalmus today than I have in my lifetime. It was amazing. Most were in poor shape, as they were washed up at high tide. Around 7 were moving and in moderately good shape. Most specimens were found at tide line on ocean side. The largest and healthiest specimen (nick named gorilla) was found just over the inlet on the intracoastal side of the island. The locals were talking about recent stings which were quite painful. Gorilla is shown in the picture, with my hand as reference for its size.
The island is incredibly interesting because it seems to be a Cubozoan hot spot. Today could certainly be an anomaly, but it is a record in the past with Chiropsalmus washing up.

Nice specimen! Notice those
Nice specimen! Notice those pedalia, they look kind of different compared to the other Chiropsalmus, way more rigid. Almost like a Chironex. Interesting find. Looks like a good spot as well, will have to visit there some time and check it out myself.
Edit: there was a disturbance near GA/SC at the time you were at Sunset Beach, maybe it's connected?
