Gonionemus vertens - clinger Jellyfish, Nobska Beach Woods Hole

Description and Comments

I was stung by a clinger jellyfish swimming at Nobska Beach. I had previously been stung by a Portuguese man-of-war 35 years earlier, and ended up having a Type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction with anaphylactic shock and pulmonary edema. The symptoms started with a fever 3 days after the initial sting and by the next day, I had hives, vomiting, fever andit felt like I was burning from the inside out. I was admitted to the hospital 9 days after the sting and kept on oxygen, steroids and antihistamines for 4 days.
