Big Sur Velalla washed up on shore

I saw perhaps a few thousand velalla washed up on the beach north of Big Sur in California. I had no idea what they were, or if they were endangered or whether I should leave them on the shore or try to put them back in the ocean. I ended up leaving them alone.
