Velella velella washed up at Sunset Beach, CA

Description and Comments

They're washing up all over the Pacific Coast, from SoCal to Oregon this month. The common name is “by-the-wind sailor.,” They has have a clear fin and a blue, oval body about 3-3.5" long. Delicate and beautiful. Those that have been stranded too long turn clear. An absolutely fantastic creature (or more technically, an entire colony of creatures).
