Box Jellyfish in South Florida

This Jelly was actively swimming around my underwater dock light behind my house on a side canal of the New River (about 1 mile inland) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this November 2013.

Yes, this is definitely a Box Jelly, likely Tamoya haplonema. Generally these are not seen at this time of year. I suggest changing your sighting type to box jelly so that people know it is in fact one. Thanks for the report and image!

Did you notice any color
Did you notice any color banding on the tentacles? I am not able to discern from the photo. If there was banding between a rusty red/brown and white colors on the tentacles you have a rare Tamoya ohboya, spotted as of yet only in the Caribbean. f the tentacles were generally only yellow or purple (no banding), you have Tamoya haplonema, a native species.

Myself also. I do believe that this is Tamoya ohboya. This would be the first documented case of T. ohboya that has been confirmed this far North.
