How do jellyfish reproduce? There are so many different kinds of jellyfish that it is hard to describe all the variations of reproduction. Typically, male and female gametes will come together (either in the water or inside the female jellyfish), then that will grow into a small larva called a planula. Depending on the type of jellyfish, this can either develop into a tiny jellyfish, or it can settle on the bottom to form a polyp -- basically a stalk that can divide off little medusae asexually. For more information about reproduction look at the life cycle diagram at this link, but keep in mind that this does not apply to all the different kinds of jellies.
