large beaching of Medusa velella

Description and Comments

for the past couple of days, and actually the past week or two also, a huge bloom of these jellyfish have washed ashore. numbers washed ashore must surpass in the tens of thousands, because the shore that is about 300 m long has a meter wide strip of them lining the shore. same with last week, but they were already a few days old by then. they range from small to about 12 cm (3-4 inches). along with the jellyfish there are also strings of little translucent animals, roughly egg shaped, which i must assume are related somehow. they are much smaller, only up to about 1-2 CM (about .5 inches)

i will try to take photos today, weather and conditions permitting... :)
