High numbers of siphonophore Nanomia for weeks now

Description and Comments

The unprecedented relatively high numbers of Nanomia bijuga, a small siphonophore, continue in Friday Harbor for at least the third week. One could collect 50-100 from surface waters over a few hours most days since mid-May. I can't remember a year like this in the past 35. (Seeing a few Nanomia in a week in May-June is typical.) Other mostly small hydromedusae - about 10-15 species - continue to be present.
