Jellies on the west coast of Scotland

Description and Comments

I'm spending the summer in Oban, at the Scottish Association for Marine Science laboratories (SAMS). My plan is to start new cultures of scyphomedusae while I'm here. Today I observed about 100+ moon jellies, Aurelia aurita, and several of the females were brooding planulae on their oral arms. I also collected 5 Cyanea capillata washed up on the beach. Of these three were male, one was female and one was to immature to identify. Wow do they pack a sting! I'm wearing my cattle gloves from now on when handling them
