Velella velella in Bodega Bay, California
Description and Comments
Three small By-the-wind Sailors washed ashore on Salmon Creek Beach in Bodega Bay, California. They were 10 mm, 12 mm, and 15 mm long (see photo). After being common in late July, August, and September, most of the live Velella velella stopped washing ashore in late September. I wasn't sure we'd see anymore living animals this year, but we spotted these small individuals on 27 October 2014.
