The water looks like greenish coffee!

Description and Comments

There is a massive Heterosigma (single-celled flagellate) bloom in at least North Puget Sound - Salish Sea. The surface water is the color of greenish coffee. This bloom hit Friday Harbor June 24 and is pretty much over now a week later. Surface cell counts June 26, 27, 28 reported as millions per liter on the eastern side of the San Juan Islands. This apparently corresponds with runoff from the Fraser River near Vancouver, and the surface salinity has dropped in Friday Harbor from normal 30 o/oo to 28 o/oo. Few jellies this week in the near-surface layer.
