Jellyfish population explosion

Description and Comments

We were on our boat at Brownsville Marina, Washington, and on August 11 we noticed an incredible amount of jelly fish. We have been boating for many years and have never seen anything like it. Do you have any information about this?

Nice photo. Those are moon jellies in the genus Aurelia. I am not sure about your particular area, but they are known to bloom in the Puget Sound from Olympia up through Vancouver. Their polyps like to live on the shady undersides of floating docks.
