Thousands of tiny sails scatter Moonstone Beach, Cambria, CA
Description and Comments
We come to Cambria at least once a year in late spring or early summer. I have never seen what I saw when arriving today; thousands upon thousands of dead white sails of V. Velella from one end of Moonstone Beach to the other, several miles. There were some of the blue organisms with sails attached stranded on the shoreline but we did not see any alive in the water. There were also large globs of tar/oil which CAN'T Be good for any life form, but do not know if it contributed to the mass stranding of what appears to be millions of Velella.
