Big Thysanostoma(?) at Makena, Maui 05 May '09

Description and Comments

Bell about 16" across, arms about 6 to 7 feet long. Off One Uli (Makena, Hawaii- island of Maui), about 100 yards out, depth about 20 - 30 feet deep open sandy area. Southerly current with Mantas that day. Seemed to have an avulsion and another bump atop the bell, as if it had been hurt. Swam with it for about 1/2 hour. At one point, it turned directly toward the surface, touched the air then made a direct turn toward the bottom until it touched sand, then made a direct turn out to sea, away from the beach/reef, as if it were measuring how close to shore it was.
