Lion's Head Jellyfish in Newport, RI

Description and Comments

First spotted on 5/11/14, Mother's Day, as we were taking the winter cover off of our sailboat. We saw five (5) Lion's Head jellyfish of varying sizes that day. Have seen one or two of varying sizes around the marina in Newport Harbor every day since. The picture is of one we captured with a net yesterday, and released almost immediately. When in the water the tendrils reached 12-18" and this one was 6-8" across when compacted and nearly 10-12" across when expanded. (Not sure if that's correct jargon, we're new to observing!)
