Thumbnail-sized Globs on Ellwood Beach, Santa Barbara, California

Saw 1000s of these wide-as-a-man's thumbnail little globs, stranded at low tide. No sails, no banding. Each had what I call a "purple brain" dot contained within. I picked up several. No life/movement and certainly no tentacles.

The "purple brain" is the give-away. Those are salps -- possibly Iasis or Salpa fusiformis. They have been thick along the California shore and even caused Diablo Canyon to shut down a reactor earlier this year...Interesting to know they are still going in SB...
