Mixed jelly swarm in Montery Bay

Description and Comments

At around 10:30 AM on April 24, we were in a small boat about 2-3 miles offshore of Moss Landing and saw aggregations of Scrippsia medusae (2 to 6 cm diam bells), Salpa (fusiformus?) (3 to 5 cm long), and a few ovoid ctenophores (2-3 cm long axis) in patches at the sea surface.

Related observations: I have seen small aggregations of similar medusae at the sea surface and washed up on the beaches of Monterey Bay over the past 3 weeks. Also, saw chains of salps (Salpa) just outside the surf zone at Moss Landing State beach on April 27.
