big Pleurobrachia bachei

Description and Comments

First evidence of the spring plankton change in Friday Harbor, with big Pleurobrachia bachei (8 seen in 10 minutes) and the occasional Beroe abyssicola having come in from somewhere - the open ocean? - along with a big swarm of euphausiids (krill). There are a few syllid worms up swimming in the plankton, but otherwise the water is still empty of macrozooplankton, though copepods are also becoming abundant.
