Janthina -- Bodega Bay, CA -- 3/3/2016

Just a note that Purple Sea Snails (Janthina umbilicata) have continued to wash ashore in Bodega Bay, California. We found ~60 individuals (and probably missed many of the smallest individuals) on 3 March 2016. Although in the past we thought Janthina might appear with large numbers of Velella, recently, with a few exceptions of very small individuals, Velella have been relatively sparse. On the same day that we found these Janthina, we only found a few Velella (approximately 2 cm long).
