Velella Velella massive die off

We saw many dead Velella Velella (thousands--they were all up and down the waterline) on Ocean Beach, San Francisco today. We didn't know what they were, but after some research that's the closest thing they looked like. They weren't all neat and tidy with crisp sails, looked more like a pile of soft muscles, if the shells were beaten soft.
