Purple Jellyfish in Daytona Beach
Description and Comments
Saw a jellyfish purplish in color in the water just off the shore of Daytona Beach. Not sure of the type. We all got out of the water and then decided to go back in a little bit later. It was back and in the same area.

If you wouldn't mind, could
If you wouldn't mind, could you describe the jellyfish in detail? There are two types of Schyphozoans that could potentially match your description. A larger species (8-24 inches across) with wispy tentacles. It has a purple to orangish color and can produce a moderate sting. This is a species of Cyanea, or Lion's Mane Jellyfish. Another, smaller species (1-10 inches across) is clear with purple and pink spots and has purplish or clear tentacles and can produce a moderate to significant sting. This is Pelagia noctiluca. If you can, create an account to describe the specimen. Thanks for the report!
