Box Jellyfish Found in Monterey Bay

Description and Comments

While diving near the wharf next to Del Monte Beach on Saturday, 04-17-10, I spotted a 1.5" long jelly with a clear box-shaped body and tentacles which were a sort of lavender color. It was hanging out near the wharf/pier near where schools of krill were massing. What intrigued me the most, however, was that in lieu of drift diving as most jellyfish are wont to do, this little sucker was propelling itself through the water. I don't know what kind of jelly this was, but it was box-shaped and though I wanted to report it to someone, there is no clear cut way to report this sighting.
