Blue Button Jelly (porpita porpita)

We are the Catalina Island Marine Institute on Catalina Island, California. We provide a hands-on marine science program and our instructors are in and on the water daily. We commonly see many other pelagic jellies but never this type. It was spotted close to shore on the lee side of the island.

Thanks for reporting. We hope you can send more. With the Velella onshore in 2014 and 2015, it is interesting that there were Porpita out there in 2012. Are you pretty confident you were seeing Porpita and not Velella?
