Aurelia finally blooming

Description and Comments

Have noticed quite a few Aurelia (labiata) over the past week. We had an unusually cold spring and July, which resulted in a prolonged primary bloom and very few jellyfish. The zooplankton bloom is just now getting underway with the arrival of hot weather (finally) in August. Aurelia are fairly plentiful but nowhere near as intense (yet?) as the dramatic blooms of last year. Most specimens are currently roughly 2-5cm in diameter, with the occasional one ~8cm.
