Zillions of Chrysaora in Monterey Bay

Description and Comments

Southern Monterey Bay, California: 1/2 mile offshore of the cities of Pacific Grove and Monterey: passing tens of thousands of Chrysaora *per minute* in motor boat, sustained for at least 2 kilometers -- most are 4-6" in bell diameter, with larger (12-14") individuals every few meters. Surface to several meters depth (as far as the eye could see). Boat crew report that "jellyfish have been extremely common this summer" in Monterey Bay. A visiting colleague reports they were "in huge numbers" at Asilomar (Pacific Grove) in September. Aurelia (12" diameter) are seen at depth mixed in with Chrysaora every 10-20 meters.
