Bonaire Banded Box Jellyfish in St Lucia

Description and Comments

Saw this jellyfish near the Pitons in St Lucia while snorkeling at 10am in the morning. Thanks to Dr Cheryl Ames, I was able to identify this jelly as a Bonaire Banded Box Jellyfish that is a new species of Tamonya currently being named. The locals believed that it drifted in with the currents and is not currently native to the area. The location is in a marine park with knowledgeable rangers who actively patrol the area. This box jellyfish was approximately two feet in length and appeared to be able to swim.
