Whidbey Island Washups

Description and Comments

Upon visiting my grandmother last summer at her beachfront house at Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, Washington, I was sad to notice a great increase in the amount of washed up jellyfish from when I was a child. Also to note that they had gone from a mere pancake size to two or three feet across. I wonder if this is from the mussel farm that has gone in at Coupville. They are poorly contained and contaminate the entire Cove. Their floats are everywhere, too. On one beach walk alone, I picked up 57 of the disks.
